Well, I think the first one seems like more of a thesis at the moment. Not that this second one can't be, but it is not yet anything more than good intentions on your part.
So I am going to talk about the first proposal. It has the potential to be a great thesis topic. But you'll have to work for it, too prevent it from falling on the right side of sentimental (a very thin line between poetry and cheese).
Monumental. Memorial. Monolithic. My advice is to start by understanding who (and what) come before you. There is a long line of architectural attempts at immortality: Easter Island, the pyramids, etc. There is also a more modern lineage: Terragni's Danteum (which you must look at carefully), Maya Lin's Vietnam Memorial, Turrel's Roden Crater. In fact a whole slew of artists: Michael Heizer, Andrew Rogers, Robert Smithson. Understand each as you begin to craft your own idea.
